Make rules

Routines are in place so that you don’t have to waste energy making decisions. My favorite routine is Ben Franklin’s. His simple daily schedule provided the structure for his many accomplishments.

Artist Rituals, by Mason Curry is a prized curation of the many idiosyncratic ways creatives throughout history have done the work they’ve done. For a more modern take on habits, Better Than Before, by Gretchin Rubin, is a wonderful guide.

The way I see it, constraints rule the roost. Whether you are composing a song, designing a style guide, or building a product, make rules. What follows will naturally take course because of constraints.
